Swinton Lock Activity Centre is a small charity set in a unique environment beside the South Yorkshire navigation canal in Swinton. Its small, multi-skilled team, delivers a range of work to support young people, adult survivors of abuse and their families, as well as providing classes accessible by the local community in art and pottery. Swinton Lock Activity Centre also owns two boats, a narrowboat used for training in boating skills and a wide-beam fully accessible boat which is used as a hire boat for community boat trips and private hire trips. In addition to this work Swinton Lock Activity Centre offers opportunities for volunteering on our boats as well as fundraising activities.
What will you be doing?
The trustees have the main responsibility for running our charity and this can be rewarding as well as providing opportunities for personal development. As you bring your skills and knowledge to Swinton Lock Activity Centre, you will have the opportunity to gain new experiences.
As a Trustee the commitment and energy you display will make a direct difference to the charity and everyone it helps.
Our Trustee meetings are held each month, but we are working towards these being held every other month at our premises in Swinton.
Trustees are also able to join specialist sub-groups as and when required which would mean additional time commitment.

What difference will you make?

What’s in it for the volunteer?
This is an opportunity to support Swinton Lock Activity Centre to continue to make a difference to hundreds of people’s lives each year. Working alongside our friendly and experienced board there will be opportunities for personal development, to gain new experiences and to support an organisation with a small passionate and dedicated staff team!
The Board meets currently monthly on a Monday afternoon from 1.30pm to approximately 4pm. The intention is for the board meetings to occur every other month in the near future.
There are occasions when a sub-group may be formed to assist in a particular area which then reports back to board. We ask that some board members become involved in these sub-groups from time to time.
We ask that you attend organisational events when possible, this is optional but encouraged.
