Swinton Lock Activity Centre is a trusted safe space, committed to delivering emotional, social and wellbeing services, which are community led.
We are based adjacent to the South Yorkshire Navigational Canal and own two narrow boats, one of which is fully accessible. Both boats are used to offer boat-handling courses, volunteering opportunities and pleasure trips to both children and adults.
What we Do

Room Hire
Our location, facilities and ample parking also make Swinton Lock an ideal location for meetings, conferences and parties.
Boat Trips & Training
Join our experienced crew for a relaxing cruise along the canal. Learn how to skipper the boat and manage locks.
Open Days
We also hold regular open days where you can come to meet the staff and sample many of the activities we have to offer.
9th May 2026, we held a BBQ to celebrate Men’s Mental Health and to bring awareness to our community. Families were invited to join us, to grab a burger and a brew, whilst getting to know current members of staff, volunteers and group members. At the Lock we currently have two separate groups we run and host at the Lock.
In the UK suicide is the leading cause of death in men under the age of 50. With 1 in every 8 men reported to suffer with poor mental health and 40% of men will not talk about their suffering, we want to see a change in those statistics. We do not recommend buying tickets from anyone but ourselves- this is to protect you from potential scammers and to ensure the safety of you the ‘public’.
Aside from the fact that you could be buying fake tickets and loosing your money, our passenger list must be updated. So if you arrive with someone else’s tickets you run the risk of not being permitted on the boat. Our insurance and the safety of our crew and passengers relies on our booking system and correct details being used.
If you sell your tickets on, it is vital that you update the booking information with our office staff.

We've hired the barge twice last year on both occasions we had a fantastic time the last one was for 6hrs we took our own buffet we had a fabulous day so we are doing it again in June cart wait the crew that work on the barge are fabulous there very helpful in every way give it a try im sure you'll enjoy every minute 😀

FREE event, for you and your family. This is an opportunity for existing service users, volunteers and group members to support the centre and each other while sharing food, good company and with any luck, the sun will make an appearance!
This is a great time for anyone interested in joining a men’s mental health group. Come and meet the team of volunteers, staff and take the first step towards better mental health. We encourage anyone who wishes to find out more to come down, so we can help you find the support you need.
