Volunteering

Volunteering with Swinton Lock

Swinton Lock Activity Centre aims to provide an excellent volunteering experience for all volunteers in the centre.

As a charity we require all volunteers to undertake an enhanced DBS check in relation to working with children and we require all volunteers to undertake a set of mandatory online training courses, which are refreshed every year. Mandatory training is included due to the nature of our service users and Safeguarding.

Regular volunteer meetings form part of the support system in centre, and we aim to hold regular events where all volunteers are invited, some of these are team building exercises whilst others are in relation to celebratory events and opportunities to thank the volunteers for the amazing work, they help us achieve.

We have a range of roles in centre, the current roles available are:

Boat volunteer – A boat volunteer needs to be qualified to National Community Boat Associations CCC (Community Crew Course) standard, as an accredited centre we can offer this training to potential volunteers. Once fully trained to CCC level, volunteers can crew on our trip boat known as Spirit which is used for a variety of trips. Further opportunities to develop boat skills are available after a volunteer has gained experience on our boats.

Landscaping – During the spring, summer and autumn months our grounds need tending to. This may include creating new spaces, planting, landscaping, gardening, tending to the nature pond, creating ideas and keeping the grounds neat and tidy. Landscaping is a great way to promote positive mental health and has a huge impact on our visitors.

Maintenance – we require volunteers to help with building maintenance and grounds maintenance. This can include painting and decorating, building maintenance, implementing new spaces, fixing & regeneration of existing spaces, decking, building and more.

Trustee – our board of trustees are the volunteers that govern our organisation, they devolve the day-to-day operational responsibility to our CEO. Trustees ensure our charity is carrying out its purposes for the public benefit. We require trustees who have experience in business, whether that be charity or outside industry, key skills in marketing, promotion, investment, legal services, or HR are always sought after.
